Hi Addie,
There are a multitude of reasons why people can choose to combine their pets. On the most part I prefer doing this particular transfer with an older identity being added to a young unformed one, but if the owner has health problems that make having multiple dogs a problem, or financial difficulties or anything along those lines at the time of the animal's passing, I can place the identity of the the said dog into the other dog that is still with the family, either permanently or until times have changed in such a way that a "new" dog can be found. By doing this at least the owner is assured of keeping the beloved identity near no matter what the circumstances.
Yes, some new character traits always occur after a transfer, it is inevitable. I am very pleased to hear that you are so happy with you Jones, though.
Best wishes to you and yours. Patricia
